Looking Forward

by John Mayer
ACM Executive Director

Dear Friend of the Museum,

The construction sign is up! Work on the IHC has begun.

Even with our offices closed and our programs postponed, staff and volunteers are keeping a schedule of meetings and working on program development. Behind the scenes, there is a lot going on. And sometimes it is hard to know how we were able to keep up before we were affected by the crisis.

Most important, like every business, nonprofit, and cultural organization, we are beginning to lay the groundwork for the future. Staying the same is not an option here. As a small organization we do not have the benefit of a huge endowment or other resources. Thanks to some grant programs, a vision is coming together.

Support. We were awarded a small grant from the Essex County Community Foundation Creative County Nonprofit Resiliency program. Funds from ECCF will cover project expenses for a much needed cataloging system for the museum collection. A building block for our future.

SBA PPP. And thanks to our friends at Newburyport Bank, the ACM received an allocation through the Paycheck Protection Program. These funds have covered salaries for the past two months and helped us remain slightly ahead of expenses for the moment.

Planning. We have applied for a CARES Act grant through the National Endowment of the Humanities. This is emergency funding for humanities organizations to develop new ways to operate and extend their connection to the community. We have asked for funding to establish an online learning program which would complement our traditional programs. Even if we are not funded through the NEH, we have realized how critical this new approach to programming will be for our future. One way or another, this will happen.

Hopeful. Work on the Industrial History Center has started again. Gradually. One crew at a time. Safety is important, our space is isolated, and we have flexibility with the project schedule. You will hear more about the IHC in a Campaign Newsletter soon!

Graphic design students and colleague from Merrimack College.

Learning. The Industrial History Center served as a case study for four advanced design students from Merrimack College. With guidance from professor Dan Vlahos, the students spent the spring semester developing elements for the IHC including a signage program, a website design, and a clever scavenger hunt for community engagement. We all gained from this experience and see great potential in future collaborations.

Resources. If you haven't visited lately, take a look at our website. Every week new materials are added. The Digital Library is our most recent addition. It includes interesting resources that connect to early Amesbury history. The more you explore, the more you will discover!

Community. Our mission is focused on you and the rich history of our region. All of us who are part of the ACM believe the work we do contributes to the quality of life in Amesbury and beyond. Many of you agree and are members and supporters. If you are not, would you consider becoming a member today? Your membership truly makes a difference and helps us continue our work. Click here to join us online or here for a form to mail. Why not?

We thank you and look forward to great things ahead. As always, please reach out to me with any thoughts or questions. More to come - Onward!

Sincerely yours,

John Mayer
