Time Travel on Amesbury’s Main Street

What is it that makes looking at old photos of familiar sights so enjoyable to many of us? Psychologists might know the answer. But maybe it’s simply a way to travel through time, and few of us can turn down such an adventure.

Lucky for local Amesbury time-travelers, ACM volunteer Mike Harrold has collected some old images of downtown Amesbury and shares them for our enjoyment. Below are three images of buildings on Main Street, looking south from the intersection of Mill Street and Friend Street, from today, 1900 and 1875. You’ll probably enjoy seeing how much the scene has changed over the years but somehow remains recognizable if you look closely.

The same view as above from a 1900 postcard.

A similar view from 1875.
